Internet Archive – Waaaaaay Back Machine!

By Amy Armitage

Have you seen the website Internet Archive, Way Back Machine?

It shows you very old and original versions of websites including Lunarpages in 2001 and all of our designs and progressions over the years.

Lunarpages – May 5, 2001

Below we have showcased the original websites for some of the major players online today and the evolution is so interesting.  You can click each image to see a larger view that opens in a new window.

Google – Nov 11, 1998, Dec 02, 1998

Facebook- Dec 12, 1998, Jan 25, 1999

Twitter – March 2, 2001 (not much has changed)

Microsoft – October 20, 1996

CNN - June 20, 2000

YouTube – April 28, 2005

Blogger.com – October 12, 1999

CraigsList – November 11, 1998

MySpace – January 17, 1997

Our question this month for you is this:

What was the first web site you built and how has it improved or evolved compared to how it once was? You can include links. If you have never built a site, then select a site that you regularly visited back in the day and comment on its improvement/evolution over the years.

We think this is going to be a fun discussion and great to see how unprofessional some of these sites looked at the beginning!

My site started out as a dozen page resource for my students, and has grown to over 800 pages of astronomy resources for the general public. Along the way it and its look evolved considerably (in fact, it looks much better now than the last time the WayBack Machine has currently listed, two years ago).

Our site is only a few years old, but has gone from a basic ‘under construction’ site, to a more general book marketing tool. Its most popular pages, however, have never changed, although their look and content has been updated. Ligers and Pictures of Ligers, despite having little to do with our main mission, receive 95% of the traffic to our site, because of their general interest. The last Wayback Machine update, two years ago, is very out of date, in terms of the general look of the site; so please feel free to take a look at the site as it is, today.

Wow, it looks like Youtube started out as a dating site?

Unfortunately the Wayback Machine isn’t perfect. I managed to recover two lost sites, but the one I want most of all isn’t there. Oddly, all three sites were on the same server, they were all designed with Netscape Composer and they were all up at the same time. What’s really odd, the missing site was up for four years, the others for about two years or less.

    book marketing offline is quite time consuming but if we talk about online book marketing, it is a different story”*;

My first site was a free one on Geocities before Yahoo bought them out. It was very colorful, crowded and disorganized. At first it was just one fairly long page with some of my artwork and links to contact me. My current site is more consistent looking and cleaner (though I am in process of reworking it again). It has separate pages for my paintings, silk scarves, pet portraits, etc. and links to my POD online shops, my blog and Twitter (haven’t add one to Facebook yet). Thumbnails link to new pages with larger views of my Labrador and dog art and I have just started to put in “Buy Now” buttons where appropriate. It is much better for marketing, but not there yet!
