One really good way I know of which works for me personally is writing ebooks and giving them out for free.

Content, content, content. That’s what the search engines look for. So, be clear about what you want your site to do. For example, our web site, http://beachesbeaches.com, helps our readers find beach hotels. When we began our site it was about beaches in general. Over time, we found that our readers were most interested in finding a hotel really on the beach, not blocks away. So, we have narrowed our focus. If you search Google for beach hotels, California beach hotels, Oregon beach hotels our site is in the top three non paid listings.

Think of people that might be interested in your site and connect w/them. For instance: I have diabetes so I connect w/ diabetic educators, diabetics, and those w/ family members that have diabetes. My site is child friendly , so I connect w/ school teachers as well.

Creating accounts on as many social media sites as possible is a great way to create multiple points of contact for your site or business. If you can update them regularly, even better. Post blogs or notes, perhaps even repurpose the content from your newsletters that you may be already creating to generate new posts on the social media sites.
