5 Most Popular Joomla Extensions
Author: Mitch Keeler
Many of our customers are using Joomla in one way, shape or form to power the Online projects or web sites they run. With that in mind, I thought I would cover some of my favorite most popular extensions for the Joomla content management system.
This tool will extend the Joomla user management system. You can add such things as extra fields in the profiles, enhanced registration workflows, user lists, connection paths between users, admin defined tabs and user profiles, image upload, front-end workflow management and more!
Need to add a forum to Joomla? FireBoard Forum is a powerful and stylish forum component for Joomla that is second to none.
The JCE extension gives you an advanced, and configurable WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor for the Joomla based pages. Also included are advanced image and media and File handling, plugin support, and an administration interface for editor configuration.
A flash-based tool, Expose is perfect for creating eye-catching slide shows of your own images you have uploaded. Think of it as your own gallery tool for Joomla. Some of the features it supports are
- direct linking to a photo or album
- a slide show can be automatically started
- a background/foreground image can be loaded
- more interface elements can be now customized
- smoother Interface
If you are looking for a nice photo or art gallery plugin for Joomla, this would be the one to get.
The Events Calendar extension for Joomla brings the events calendar back into Joomla. This tool will make it super simple to build a beautiful calendar for your members, for any reason at all.
Did I Miss Your Favorite? Let us know what you think of this list, and if you think we missed a good one you know about.

While Joomla is a fine CMS, I REALLY REALLY wish y’all would include Xoops as an alternative. It has far more template/theme and plugin support and is *far* less susceptible to attacks from the outside (when kept up to date and with a few extensions it is bullet-proof).
These are indeed cool plugins, but I can show you 10 Xoops plugins that do the job of each of these individually with far more extensibility. Just my 2¢

nico, just added an entry for Xoops in our new wiki we have been working on. If you have any links to any good tutorials on it, please send them my way at mitch.keeler@lunarpages.com. Would love to share the knowledge.

Well Mitch, I Subscribed to this RSS through my mail and starting reading through the posts today, this one stopped me when I began reading about the “5 most popular Joomla Extensions”
As a webmaster for a Joomla! site I was very interested in the Expose Flash Gallery. I have spent the last 12 hours trying to get it to function.
I even tried to subscribe to its Forum, Seems they don’t want any new persons or it is completely defunct.
I have installed the component, but no luck.
It doesn’t work, well not completely, the one thing that does work is the system check. Which tells me that the DOM or DOMXML extension (B) and libXML extension value, not installed, are not installed and gives what it calls, “a fatal warning” stating that the front end and the back end will not run on this host without modifications to the PHP configuration.
So , is it me? or is there someone out there on Lunar that is able to use this ?
