Create a FTP Account using cPanel – Wiki Preview

Share |

FTP accounts are one easy way to get files to and from your Lunarpages web hosting account. In cPanel, you can create a number of FTP accounts for a number of different folders for an number of different reasons. You may need to give a designer only access to once section of your web site. You might even want to setup a separate login combination for yourself in a separate section of your hosting account. Here is how you can setup a FTP account using cPanel.

How to Create a FTP Account with cPanel

Step number one would be to login to your cPanel account and make your way to the front page. From here, you need to select the icon that is marked “FTP Manager”, and click it.

Click the “FTP Accounts” link at the top, and you will be on the FTP Account Maintenance screen. Here is an example of what this should look like:

These are the FTP accounts already associated with your web hosting account. Click on the link “Add Account”.

The last step would be to create the login name and password for the new FTP account. Make the password 6-8 alpha-numeric characters, and it should not include the user name. In the text box for the directory, type in the name of the folder inside of your public_html folder you wish the new account to have access to.

You should now double check your information to make sure that it is correct, and if it is, you can then hit the button that reads, “Create”.

After you click, you are taken to a new screen saying your FTP account was created successfully. For additional FTP accounts you have created, be sure to use the full format user@yourdomain.com as the user name with the password you created for that FTP account.

This has been a small preview of what you can look forward to with Lunarpages new web hosting wiki. This wiki looks like it’ll have some great articles. Looking forward to reading more on its development

I was doing fine with these instructions until I got to the last sentence, which as a novice I don’t understand. Is the user name the same as the login name? And if it is, why use two different terms to describe the same thing? If it is the same why is the single word “jane” used in the example and when would I use the “user@yourdomain.com” which is not mentioned in this written tutorial or in the video tutorial.

This is an example of what I find frustrating about much of the otherwise very good documentation on Lunarpages. There is always some little oddity or unexplained tidbit that causes frustration and uncertainty. An example is the fist pounding frustration suffered before I finally figured out that the Helpdesk required a new and different password than my regular account password to log into it. No where was this requirement indicated at the time.

    I don’t think I got it
