Fixing Your Website with Deep Trawl
Author: Tiara Rea
To me, the worst thing about website errors is that they can often go undiagnosed for weeks, months, or even years if you don’t have the time to monitor every inch of your website 24/7. And for those of you who have hundreds of pages to look over for these errors, it can not only get tedious but incredibly frustrating to boot.
That’s why I’m really excited about the newest edition to our $775 Free Software & Services bonuses – Deep Trawl! Deep Trawl is an amazing website error checking application that will run on Windows or Mac OSX.
What does Deep Trawl do?
In one word? – everything!! Here’s a brief rundown of some of the cool things Deep Trawl does:
- searches for dead links, 404 errors, and other common website errors
- finds missing images or invalid images
- highlights invalid xhtml and html coding errors
- seeks out spelling mistakes & undesirable user postings
- shows missing SEO user defined problems
- finds out of date and/or slow loading content
How does Deep Trawl work?
Their intuitive interface allows you to scan your entire site with just one click to see every error, page by page. Further, each error has links to show further information on the problems that arise.

Plus, errors are highlighted in red from right in your web browser and you can also see them in the integrated html editor, so that you can fix them ASAP!

What is the benefit of things like searching for undesirable postings and spell checking?
Spelling is the bane of my existence, so I use Microsoft’s spellchecker that comes with Word. Even when I’m writing emails, I’m so happy when Outlook corrects my fast-typing typos. But when editing a website, you may neglect to see that ‘the’ is spelled ‘teh’ or that you have misspelled ‘exercise’ twice. These kinds of errors can lower your SEO and the respect you’ll garnish from your customers, so Deep Trawl finds those errors and helps you fix them with a full US, UK, and Canadian English dictionary on hand.
For undesirable postings, just imagine if someone visited your family friendly forum and posted spam or pornography links. Or, if you’re a business owner, image if your competition posted one of their specials on your blog and your customers migrate to their services. Deep Trawl can be set to check your site several times every day for content you don’t want people to see, like spam, profanity, links to unusual and likely unsafe file types, or even links to competitors’ websites.
How much is this software worth?
Deep Trawl is valued at $50! But it’s yours free when you host with LP.
To find out more about it, visit DeepTrawl.com or just login to your Lunarpages account and download your free copy instantly!

Thanks for another neat tool.

Looks incredible going to have to give this one a download for sure.

I have been looking for something like this forever!
July 24th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
I really wish that if you are going to give away only the “lite” or limited version of something you would make that obvious in the description before we waste time downloading something and/or giving our email addresses who is now going to spam us trying to get us to buy the full version.

OK, I give up. How exactly do I download the free version of Deep Trawl? I got the copy from Deep Trawl, but it’s not free, it’s an evaluation copy.

Hi Mike – You should have also received an email with the unlock key for the full version.
If you haven’t received it yet, 1) check your spam/bulk/junk email folder and then 2) email me at affiliate@lunarpages.com and let me know what email address you used to signup so I can notify DeepTrawl to resend this info to you.
I just tested again and got my unlock key about 5 seconds after submitting.

I’m an affiliate to Lunarpages. Am I entitled to get the free copy of Deep Trawl? I’ve been for almost a year.
July 25th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I’m confused – I downloaded this, but like Mike I don’t understand how to unlock it. There was nothing at the Deep Trawl website that asked for my e-mail, so it’s pretty unlikely that I’ll be receiving an unlock key from them!

Lisa M – did you click through the URL in your Lunarpages Customer Account Page? Log in to account.lunarpages.com with your LP username and password and follow the URL there.
It asks for your name, email, and then if you’d like to subscribe to their mailing list. Let me know if you still can’t find it!

Victor – You have to be a customer of Lunarpages’ to get the free software, so if you already have an account with us, just login via account.lunarpages.com and login and it’s yours

DOH! Thanks. Got it now.

Deep Trawl is not listed on the free webmaster tools page. I logged in, went from: account.lunarpages.com > account.lunarpages.com/webmaster_tools.php > lunarpages.com/free-webmaster-tools/. Also tried logging in to affiliate page. No Deep Trawl. Going directly to the Deep Trawl homepage via the link in this blog post allows free download, but it’s just a 30-day trial version. Why bother?

Jordan – Actually, you just need to login to account.lunarpages.com and click on the Specials tab which will bring up the $775 Free Bonus button. Click on that and you’ll see all the free offers that are available, including Deep Trawl.
It’s there, and it’s not a trial version. It’s a version Deep Trawl created especially for Lunarpages!

Tiara
You could make it less of a treasure hunt to find these things. Suggestion: put all the free webmaster tools on the free webmaster tools page.
Anyway, followed your instructions, got Deep Trawl free version. Unlocking with the license key was a hassle. Their “paste” button pasted in the key incorrectly from the clipboard. Had to correct the key manually; difficult since Deep Trawl wants to use the full screen. It hid the email with the key number every time I entered a digit into the license window.
Deep Trawl took a long time to start up, and running it took a long time. It called lots of things problems that aren’t. Technical terms, words from foreign languages, were called incorrectly spelled words. Pages with no keywords meta tag were called problems! Keywords meta tags have been ignored by Google’s robot for years. Some other search robots may still read them, but probably don’t use them in determining search results.
For comparison, I ran a freeware link checker (Integrity, for MacOSX, from peacockmedia.co.uk). Ran much faster, was simpler to see the link status. For code validation, the W3.org validators are free to use, fast, and give more detailed results. Deep Trawl is too cumbersome for my taste.

GREAT SOFTWARE BUT NO SUPPORT AT ALL FOR THE $49 version.
I tried to buy but the key was invalid and they refused to reply.
Is there anyplace else you can get it?
August 18th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
The key was invalid? Hmm…can you write to me at affiliate@lunarpages.com with your domain, the key they sent, and email address so I can email Deep Trawl and see what’s up? I’ve had no trouble when I run a test to get mine, so I’m sure we can get this resolved for you ASAP.

I had no problem downloading the free version and pasting the license key. My problem is that I know very little about HTML and so I thought this would be an ideal tool for me to use. However, as far as I can see, Deep Trawl only indicates the “errors” but does nothing to help someone like me actually fix them, or am I missing something? For example, I’m getting loads of messages showing that gif images are invalid. How do I make them valid?
It certainly does nothing for my confidence in the program to find this message when I click on the Info Option for an ‘Incorrectly’ spelled word:
Incorrectly spelled word: website (x2)
Found by search type titled: Check spelling
The word: website was spelled incorrectly. Spelleing suggestions can be viewed by pressing “View in Editor”,
then pressing “Suggest” next to the problem.
First, what’s wrong with the word ‘website’? Yes, I know it can be split into two words, but this word is in common everyday use. Second, I can not believe that they misspelled the word ’spelling’ in the second last line on the error message. Check it out for yourselves if you have a spelling error highlighted. Someone at Deep Trawl must be very embarrassed over that one.
Incidentally, when I followed the above instructions, none of their ’suggestions’ had anything to do with a website. They even suggested the word ‘embitter’, wherever that comes from! It makes me think that they are using some sort of dictionary database that was compiled before the Internet was ever dreamed of.
So basically, I’m not too impressed and thankfully, did not waste $49 on it. If I had, I certainly would have felt embittered!
