Well, this is most discouraging and depressing. I'm a retired person on a set income who dabbles in website development as a hobby and for the intellectual excitement and stimulation it brings. Through my Lunarpages account I'm running only three websites; all of which are non-profit.

One is a membership & news site maintained for the Association of California State Employees with Disabilities, ACSEDonline.org. A second is a site where I and some friends write and share off-beat stories, NorthernCaliforniaViews.com. The third is my primary account site with Lunarpages. Right now it does nothing but act as an umbrella for the other two. Two of those sites offer free memberships and have forum type bulletin boards. But the membership of both is very small and the forums are used rarely, usually only by me and one friend. I collect no money, sell no goods, and charge no fees. My very small Lunarpages fees are paid out of my Social Security Disability check, which I would likely loose if I started making (or even tried to make) money off of these hobbies.

So, now learning that I should probably put out more money to have my sites "protected" by appropriate legal service terms or face the threat of lawsuits ... It just sounds like I would be better off shutting everything down. Or maybe I should not read and respond to articles of this type on a too-early and dreary foggy Monday morning. Perhaps more coffee is called for.
