cPanel Help and How-to FAQs

Author: Mitch Keeler

With the Lunarpages Basic and Business accounts, cPanel is the control panel of choice. Being one of the standards in control panels for a number of years, there are both a lot of advantages and disadvantages of this product. With complexity comes questions, so here are a few of the most frequently asked cPanel questions and answers to save the day.

Question: How can I login to cPanel?

Answer: There are a number of different ways you can access the cPanel for your hosting account. One of the easiest would be to click the control panel link on your Customer Account Page. Here are a few other alternatives you might want to make note of:

http://SERVER.lunarservers.com/cpanel
http://SERVER.lunarservers.com:2082
https://SERVER.lunarservers.com:2083 (secure)
http://login.SERVER.lunarservers.com (port 80)
https://login.SERVER.lunarservers.com (secure)

http://DOMAIN.com/cpanel
http://DOMAIN.com:2082
https://DOMAIN.com:2083 (secure)

Also, as another helpful hint for you, if lunarservers.com isn’t working for you as an address please try lunarpages.com. This location might change due to the location of the server you’re hosted on.

Question: The server cPanel status lights and links freak me out. Is there something going on I should be afraid of?

Answer: The short answer is no. The cPanel server status feature is not a reliable source of accurate information. For more information there has been a thread created on the forums to help out with translating the hosting jargon to something you can understand.

We have superior support administrators monitoring the servers 24/7 so your hosting account is always under a trained eye.

Question: How can I stop cPanel from bugging me about needing to change my contact e-mail address?

Answer: This is an annoyance of cPanel, but here is your fix. Where it says:

No contact email has been set. You will be unable to receive notifications or reset your password if you do not set a contact email address.

Under that it says:

Please update your contact information here.

Click on the word here It will take you to a link where you can update your contact e-mail.

Like with any powerful tool there are a few things that can seem confusing. Hopefully that will help some Lunarmaniacs out there with their cPanel-specific woes.

The only secure URL I can access directly is:
https://login.matra.lunarpages.com/ (where matra is the server).
I cannot access urls that quote port 2083 because this port is closed on the local ISA server/proxy/firewall setup for security reasons.
However, going to this URL presents the following message:

“There is a problem with this website’s security certificate.
The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website’s address.
Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.”

Thereafter it would appear that the login and control panel pages are not secure.
    Regards
    Steve

Awesome tips, would like to see Lunarpages put more of these out.

This cPanel column is a nice feature. Please keep it in the newsletter. I’d like to see you pick one or two or three individual icons on the cPanel each newsletter and explore what they are, what they do, and importantly, how to get the most out of each one. There is a lot of capacity there that I don’t use because I haven’t adequately explored. Doing this in slow motion, a couple at a time, via the newsletter would be helpful. Thanks.

Thanks for the kind comments everybody, keep the feedback coming!

Steve - To answer your question, basically, the SSL certificate (for https access) was issued to SERVERNAME.lunarpages.com (or lunarservers), and the domain actually being accessed is login.SERVERNAME.lunarpages.com. So, the browser gets concerned and squawks. Nothing to be alarmed about; perfectly routine and normal operation. Hope that helps!

Why do you publish so many different ways to access cPanel? Why not just publish one or two?

None of them work very well for me but it takes me a great deal of time to test all of them.

I use Roboform, and when I access cPanel through your addresses, I get the popup window that I think indicates a password-protected directory. Because it’s a popup and the page hasn’t loaded fully, Roboform won’t fill it. If I click on the “cancel” button, I then get the regular, full-screen login window which I then have to manually direct Roboform to fill in.

I have yet to find a way to simply log on automatically to cPanel at Lunar with Roboform. At the other hosting services I use, I click once on Roboform and a few seconds later, I’m at their cPanel.

Either I’m doing something wrong, or you have your cPanel logon configured very strangely.

    Bob

Hi Bob, well we like to give people plenty of options - some logins are different than others to help with usability and for some people that have certain ports blocked. I am guessing that Roboform can’t handle popup login Windows? Might contact the Roboforum people about that one.

For an alternative, you might login to your account via the CAP (Customer Account Page) here:

    https://account.lunarpages.com

Then from there, login to your control panel. Hope that helps - if not, shoot us an e-mail over at support@lunarpages.com and we’ll be happy to look into this a little deeper for you.

  7. Lunartics Tiara Says:

Yeah, I use the latter method, Mitch, and though it might take about 20 seconds longer, my passwords are always stored and there’s never a problem.

  8. Lunartics Jo Says:

Hey Mitch, thanks for helping us understand cPanel better. I find it pretty scarry so the more explained the better. :) so keep explaining the features please :)
