The Basics of FTP at Lunarpages

Author: Mitch Keeler

For those new to the web hosting game, the jargon tossed around when you are first getting your feet wet might seem both intimidating and confusing. A lot might be assumed as far as your knowledge goes, but Lunarpages wants to remember that not everybody is a grade A webmaster from day one. What is one of the more confusing terms? For an example, lets take FTP. What does that stand for and how do you use it?

FTP is a acronym for file transfer protocol. It is used to transfer files from one location to another location across a network or the Web. To make it work you need an FTP server (which would be your Lunarpages web hosting account in this situation) and an FTP client.

Sorry, just tossed another jargon word in there. A FTP client is a program that you would have installed on your computer to make a connection with the hosting account so that you can move and upload files. Some good suggestions out there for FTP clients are:

There are many more out there for you to choose from as well.

Now that you have your FTP client, you know what FTP is and of course you have your Lunarpages hosting account, how do you make it all work together?

We have a number of tutorials on hot to setup FTP here too: http://www.lunarpages.com/tutorials/

Hostname: yourdomain.com or servername.lunarpages.com (Change to your domain or server name. If you are on a Windows server and have purchased a dedicated IP, use the dedicated IP.)
Username: your user name
Password: your password
Passive FTP: ON for Linux accounts, OFF for Windows accounts

For additional FTP accounts you have created, be sure to use the full format user@yourdomain.com as the user name with the password you created for that FTP account.
